At times, I felt the story was making an indirect case for anthropology and archeology-two areas of research that fascinate me. As Kyreol explores the known and unknown world beyond her home, she discovers how the revered Moon-Flash in the sky is seen differently by other tribes and civilizations.

The story does have a couple strengths, the first one being how different people can interpret the same thing in various, separate ways, resulting in a diversity of beliefs, traditions, and lifestyles. McKillip has authored a couple fantasy books I’ve enjoyed in the past, and Moon-Flash promised an interesting read at least. Expectation: Gleaming RiverĪs someone who isn’t drawn to science fiction, I wanted to expand my reading habits into genres I’m not overly familiar with or interested in. When a stranger appears during Moon-Flash, a holiday of rebirth and betrothals, Kyreol knows instinctively that he holds the secret of what happened to her mother and even more importantly, what lies beyond Fourteen Falls where the sky and land meet and the world ends. But the one mystery that lingers over Kyreol is the disappearance of her mother who left the family and vanished down the river. As a daughter of a Healer with a gift for storytelling and an inquisitive mind, she can see and dream of things that her fellow villagers cannot understand. Kyreol knows the world starts and ends with Fourteen Falls, cut through by the river.
